This book is very short and thus it's not clear to me if the series is worth pursuing. I'm moving on to book two, which should decide the matter.
One niggle so far. Subaru took entirely too long to realize what was going on. This is somewhat excused by the mental confusion that seems to accompany the restarts.
I also want to note the way the author manages to capture the sense of over-acting that is prevalent in this genre of animated manga. It's cute.

Solid beginning to a great series plot-wise, and the writing really picks up during the final confrontation, but my *god* the writing style is just awful. I dunno if it's just the translation or what, but it's just horrifically stilted and boring. Eugh. re:zero you know I love you but like just make it a bit easier on me..
..and Subaru's about 100x cringier here too, which I think can partially be attributed to the fact that through the anime, you can at least have body language/tone of voice/facial expressions to get deeper into his thought process, because Subaru's a "repress the pain until it's absolutely unbearable" type guy. But in the book, you don't get that more subtle characterization (because the prose is about as subtle as a brick to the face), so he's just kinda embarrassing to watch lol.
Knowing the juicy juicy stuff that's to follow, I'm actually really excited to read the next book, and really hopeful that the writing/translation quality will improve. Either way, though, I really cant give this anything higher than a 2.

Not sure if it was poorly translated or true to the author, however it feels like it was written by a horny 12 year old boy. Subaru is a lack luster main character, who not only is extremely annoying and cringey, but tries to make every situation about himself. The women are written poorly on top of this, serving as only things to look at. Elsa, for example, is supposed to be the antagonist but her only descriptor is being erotic. You can write women characters without them only serving as something for a man to look at or be attracted to. Also, there were some vague misogynistic and weird comments. For example, Felt was described by Subaru as having a small chest, which is why she must be younger than Satella (not even how that works, but also incredibly creepy). And once again, during a fight scene, Elsa was “good for being a woman.”
I don't know why it took me so long to finish this novel, 'cause I really liked it.
The animu is quite good as well, but there's nothing like reading the original story from Subaru's point of view.
I'm up for the second novel release 'cause the characters are so likeable to the point you feel actual pain if something happens to any of them.
Until now, Reinhard is my fav and I would love to see more of him... tho that might not happen in a near future.
Rem and Ram make their debut on the second volume and I'm so excited about it!
Despite the fact there are a lot of haters, I think Subaru is one of the best male characters because of his development. I mean, sacrifice yourself in order to make the girl you like smile? Only a few would do that.
I have respect for him and I feel like he's not so far from being an actual human being. I mean he has flaws and fears but choses to overcome them and make himself a better man.
