Edmond is a widower of 3 years. His wife and son died in childbirth, and he blames himself for their deaths. He realizes that his other children are lonely, so he decides to marry so they can have a mother.

Adeline was attacked by an Earl and now her father is trying to force her to marry her attacker. In order to escape that fate, she hatches of plan to have herself caught in the room of a man that she cares for who previously offered for her hand. But she finds herself in the wrong room.

Adeline was alright, but Edmond was an ass most of the time. I felt bad for him, and he had some good moments, but I don't think that the good completely made up for the bad. The relationship was very imbalanced because Edmond was so closed off for most of the book. And the relationship that they had seemed more lustful than loving until the very end.

I love Stacy Reid and her writing, but man - this book was not my cup of tea. The hero went over and over and over about his dead wife (I get it, he loved her) and kept pushing the heroine away. Adeline was all in the game and confused - she was meant to marry another man she loved, but ended up in the wrong room with the duke. The only cool thing about the book was the little girls - they were not annoying and mean. They were both sweet and nice to Adeline from the get-go. Adeline really needed to kick the Duke of Wolverton really hard on his backside. SMH

A young woman finds herself on the cusp of being betrothed to a man who frightens her. Adeline knows that she needs to make a solid match to benefit her younger stepsisters (elements of Cinderella). Her father won’t consider the penniless suitor she would prefer. She decides to sneak into his room at a house party to “compromise” herself and force her fathers hand. However, her best friend says her up to compromise the Duke seeking the friends hand.
The Duke list his wife in child birth. He needs a mother for his two girls but will not ever seek “pleasure” with a wife. He cannot take the chance if losing anyone ever again.
I liked the slow burn and that Adeline took time to get to know his daughters. The conflict was not a surprise and the grovel was good.
Enjoyed the book and will read others in this series.

Interesting premise but unfortunately it didn't work for me. I didn't care for any of the relationships even the friendships. I also didn't like any of these characters. Adel acted like a teenager, Edmond was an idiot. It started off interesting but overall, it was not memorable for me or even cute.

The narrator's voice works for Adeline's POV, but is very jarringly with the Duke's POV.

Review of the digital edition:
The writing in this is fabulous! Truly absolutely fabulously well-written. That said I irrationally and passionately hated the Duke. The audience is supposed to sympathize with him for his accidental ruination, but I never felt any sympathy or compassion for him as a character. That said, while I hated the Duke, I adored Adeline and the Duke as a couple. I wanted better for Adeline, but they were still somehow perfect for each other.
