I’m honestly speechless. This was one of the most elaborate, sweeping, and epic books I have ever read. 
I was hoping for a little bit more fantasy elements, but with how amazing this book was I honestly didn’t mind at all. 
This book has it all: politics, complex characters, character growth, sapphic romance, mystery, inspiration, beautiful action sequences, and plot twists.

Dark and powerful, this is not a book to be read lightly. The world of 14th century China is harsh, torn by famine and war, and merciless towards women, who are deemed worthless, nothing. Zhu defies this fate, adopting her dead brother’s name and identity to rise through the ranks of a monastery and the military. Her foil is the eunuch general of the Mongol army, desperately grasping for power and honor in a world that stripped him of it. Fans of The Poppy War will likely enjoy this book.

War epics are not my cup of tea, but if they're yours you might enjoy this one! Set in ancient China and packed with destiny, epic battles, political intrigue, betrayal, the occasional ghost, and clashes between Chinese and Mongol powers, this book tells the epic story of a girl who didn't starve to death claiming a name and destiny that might not have been hers.
