I would have liked this book better would have been fast paced, for my the problem was on the second part, it was too heavy full with nothing most of the time.

I read this book because people recommend it for the ones who were still grieving the poppy war, so I couldn't help but compare the two all the time. Surprisingly, this book stood as its own, but Zhu and Rin really were the same but different at the same time. Their determination was the same but it felt like Zhu's greed was trying to be excused whereas Rin 's was just embraced.

I believe it would have been better had it been a duel pov: Ouyang and Zhu 1st person each. Because the way povs are writing in this books are really weird, you won't know who pov you're reading until like the character is addressed, and there were so many unnecessary povs, like esen, baoxiamg and even ma (Although I know people might disagree I feel like if Zhu comprehend her so well her body language would have told the same through Zhu's eyes). It was kind of confusing.

I don't remember a lot of this book, only the big points like the monastery or the confrontations but if you ask me about any other thing I won't be able to answer because there was too many useless information around. If it had been more plot driven I think it would have been better because trying to depict so many characters didn't work at all

I absolutely love this book I went into it not knowing what I would get not really expecting anything but it was so good. The characters their motivations the way that the story represents their motivation not only physically but mentally and spiritually also is just so amazing I love the format of the book. The way that characters genders and sexual orientations influence the plot and the way that they speak to not only themselves but others is absolutely stunning.
in the book The main character adopts the name of her dead brother by proxy also adopting the state that a fortune teller gave him which was greatness and renouncing the Fate that the fortune teller gave her which was nothing . Throughout most of the book the main character struggles coping with the fact that she was not born a man and that the heavens May recognize this and see what she had done and renounce her fate and kill her. I love the after the main character gets her arm cut off she becomes a new person . She is no longer in the mental space of I need to be someone I am not or I will die instead she sees herself as a different person entirely not the little girl that was subsequently buried that day not the dead brother that she stole the life of instead she is something else entirely not a man not a woman . I love that her wife except her as who she is physically but has a hard time accepting the fact that she will have to sacrifice the empathy that the main character loves so much so that she can stay with the main character who is just going on a killing spree.
It is challenging and amazing and I love it.

This book had a really interesting premise and I really liked the political intrigue aspects and not quite knowing which character was one step ahead of the other. I thought it was a masterclass in writing morally grey, motive-focused characters who are so determined to fulfil their goals that it doesn’t matter who or what stands in their way. However, the pacing was kind of all over the place and the author spent so long hiding the significance of the supernatural elements of the story that the final reveal felt a little anticlimactic. Overall it was a very well-written book, it just wasn’t quite for me.

I really enjoyed this book but can’t help but feel like some of the emotional punches would have landed harder if I had more cause to care for the characters. Zhu and Ouyang are both brilliant but in wanting to hide where the story was going, I think the author maybe lost a lot of what would have made me empathise if not completely agree with them. Ma was a personal favourite and I look forward to seeing how her story resolves in the sequel.
