It has a slow start, but then you get to know the characters, you empathize with them, the rhythm of the story picks up and you don’t want to put it down.

Tish and Fonny are in love and have been as long as they can remember. They are silly happy, expecting a baby,  and set to be married soon, until Fonny is falsely identified of a terrible crime and imprisoned. Both families set to work together to try to get him set free, but things just move so slowly and the birth of the baby is moving closer and closer.

This was a delicate portrait of love that I’ll never know. And for that I’m grateful.

Tish has loved Fonny for most of her life. Just as they are beginning to start a life together, Fonny is accused of a crime that he did not commit. Baldwin created complex characters navigating very real and unimaginable horrors.

"If Beale Street Could Talk" is about the power of love and its ability to conquer all.

This was a beautifully heartbreaking story with an ending that I had hoped for! I am so glad that I read this for my 1974 read!
