I am obsessed with any and all Hades and Persephone retellings. I understood that this wouldn’t be the finest of literature. And though the writing is not that bad; this plot line. 🫠 I hated the insta-love (or more accurately, insta-smut). Hades kept going on about how he doesn’t want to keep up with the fake dating agreement. Then he goes all Dom Dungeon Master on Persephone. It just felt fake and forced. I would have much rather it be a slow burn. Where Hades continues his reservations about  Persephone. We all know how this is going to end. There is no need to rush.

The one element that I will absolutely give Robert credit for is the Pantheon. I love that the gods are replaced. This is also means we don’t get the 500yo dating the 22yo. Yes I am looking at you, Maas.

This was enjoyable, but I'm not sure it was particularly good. To be fair, this is my first foray into erotica, and I think as a genre it just might not be for me - but then without the erotica elements the rest was quite thin and underdeveloped. There were a few eyeroll moments and it didn't really deliver on the dark angsty story I was expecting - they fell for each other very quickly and then never really disagreed, and I couldn't really be persuaded that Hades was anything but a good guy. However, there were many elements I enjoyed, including: casual queerness (two Bi MC), emphasis on consent, Hermes, and much of the banter. There were a few parts of their internal monologues that were repetitive, but otherwise the writing didn't get in the way of the story. I liked the premise and the way their relationship linked to larger stakes, but found their lack of planning frustrating - especially as it felt we were meant to think these characters were smart. Not a story to look too closely at!

I really liked this book however the setting and the world building were hard for me to grasp.  I know that’s not a huge part of this book but the confusion took me out of the story at times.  Otherwise it was a very enjoyable read 😄

This book is HOT! The smut is top tier, and the romance is so cute. AND their relationship is healthy (built on respect & trust af). Also the mythology is pretty accurate for a smut retelling.

I much prefer this version of Hades and Persephone over the version in A Touch of Darkness. Unique world building, compelling plot, interesting characters, and excellent spice. I only wish there'd been a little more exposition to really establish the villain as scary and threatening. Looking forward to reading the second one!

Kink-friendly forced proximity/fake dating plot. I was definitely entertained, though I was a bit confused about the Hades/Persephone retelling. I feel like it's actually just more like Hades/Persephone fan fiction? Because it wasn't actually based on their story. The characters in Neon Gods aren't actually gods at all. The only vaguely supernatural aspect of the story is the difficulty characters face crossing the river Styx. I'll be reading the sequels for the romance, but if you're a Greek mythology buff looking for a good retelling, I'd skip this one.
