With a title like "Neon Gods" and a Hades and Persephone pairing, there are certain things I expect.
A world where the Greek gods are out publicly and with their powers is the base expectation. But instead, this is a city where the different areas are controlled by people who hold titles that tie to the gods. No one has the magical powers of gods, just the titles. And because of that, this is just a run of the mill romance with reused names. I picked this up hoping for so much more than it is.

“Oh no, we have to pretend we’re dating!”
“But how will we convince people it’s real?”
“Public sex. It’s the only possible solution.”
Maximum spicy, plenty of fun

This is a retelling of the Hades and Perspephone story, but is based in modern times. Persephone is forced to leave Olympus under the cover of darkness and is forced to cross the River Styx and finds herself in the arms of Hades, who was thought to be dead and nothing more than a myth.

What a great story, Emily has an excellent writing style, its a brilliant plot and a nice bit of spice! I cannot wait to read the rest of the series. I can't recommend this highly enough.

The writing improves as the book progresses but never reaches anything really great. I was recommended this book because I wanted a fantastic Hades/Persephone retelling but I'll keep looking. There was a lot of telling followed up by minimal showing throughout the book which resulted in not really feeling the chemistry between the characters which I felt could be there. The smut also wasn't that smutty, it felt like Roberts was building up to something but then backed off each scene which had me skimming parts. It's an easy read as a breather between more complex books, but I probably won't be back for the sequels.
