Woah! What an epic ride!

I have to agree with the reviews I've read, this book is hard to get into but you really need to push through because it's totally worth it!!

I found the footnotes were hard-going in the beginning, because I felt like they were infodumps and took me away from the flow of the story. By the end I would glance over them or even skip them entirely. But this is just a small complaint because this was such an amazing read!!

Mia was such a strong, fierce, beautiful and witty young woman. I can't wait to read about her again. And I loved Tric, oh Tric!

Then there's all the gore, laughs and those sex scenes! This is a book filled with action, mystery and darkness. For all the fantasy lovers out there.

"Never flinch. Never fear. And never, ever forget."

Snad dvojka začne hned v tom samém duchu a nebudu zas 150 stránek trpět!

Překlad a korekce odfláknutý, jinak to asi neřeknu.

One of the worst feelings you can get from reading a book is feeling sleazy for engaging with it.

Another terrible feeling is sighing at lines that try way too hard to be epic every few pages.

And fast-forwarding past footnotes that do absolutely nothing but slow the pacing to a crawl.

And being annoyed at the fetishy treatment of teenagers, lesbians, and brown people.

Did I actually like anything about this? Uh. The world is kind of interesting? I liked Carlotta. Ashlinn was okay.

The teachers sucked, though.

Sigh. What a waste of hours.

Solid narration by Holter Graham, however.

I LOVED THIS!

This was so fun. The tone of the book itself felt as if I had struck up a conversation with a drunken retired fighter at a tavern. The narrative voice is hilarious and the characters--THE CHARACTERS! Love them. The ending had me clutching my pearls and sprinting to the second book

Absolutely amazing read! The first 70 pages were tough as it is a different writing style to what I'm used to, the notes were hard to get used to and I struggled to understand the time jumps to begin with. Once we hit 100 pages in I was hooked and couldn't put the book down.

If you like the first Throne Of Glass book and The Witcher, this is a good book for you.

I absolutely loved this book. I picked it up at Barnes and Noble because Piera Forde loves it and helped create a web series based on these books. This was the perfect book to read over spring break. I only regret that I will probably not be able to read the rest of the series before I go back to school.

This book is dark. All of the characters are very bloodthirsty, and there is a lot of violence and bloodshed.
SpoilerWhen the cat was killed at the beginning of the book, I teared up. :(
There are also some explicit sex scenes, but the book does not solely focus on romance. This is more of a fantasy/mystery, and Kristoff does an amazing job of not letting you trust anyone, or getting you to trust the wrong people.

The worldbuilding is complex, but Kristoff uses footnotes to clear up confusion and help the reader adjust to the new terminology. Right at the beginning, the concept of Nevernight is explained. This planet has three stars that constantly shine a light on the city. When two of the stars disappear over the horizon, this is considered Nevernight, because this is their night, but it is not actually dark outside. Every two and a half years, there is a period of complete darkness when all of the stars disappear from the sky, called the Truedark.

There are several loose ends to tie up in the next few books:
Spoiler - Ash is still alive and probably looking for revenge.
-Mia's younger brother is most likely alive, and may have been turned against his family and Mia.
-We think Tric is dead, but is he really? In books like this, if you don't see a body, the character could still be alive.
-Cassius is dead, and Mia still does not know much about what she is. Her mother seemed to know something about the origins of Mia's darkin powers, but she went crazy in prison and could not contribute any meaningful knowledge. According to the text Mia received, she may be drawn to eating other darkin? Very strange.
