While the voice actor did a great job I barely finished this book due to the plot.
It was finished only because it was sth. to listen to during walks.
Plot quite predictable and no suprises on my side.
I liked the concept and the shadow animals but I am not intruged to continue with the series.
Also it continued quite some unecessary detailed sex and cruelty scenes.

The excessive footnoting can get a bit too clever and I can’t say I disagree with the “magical boob job” criticisms and the way the stakes are significantly lowered when someone capable of healing all wounds and injuries is introduced, but all in all I loved this book. I love our heroine and how she walks the line between morally gray and not. She’s also legitimately clever, not just a protagonist the author repeatedly tells us is clever. Several moments in the book made me gasp out loud with surprise. This book is VERY dark and gorey but stays just shy of gorey for gores-sake. Deep world building and I look forward to the sequel.

I’m a little divided on this book.

I really liked the general concept; a school to train assassins. Next to that I loved the Italian influences that kept peeking in and the characters, the way they were quite clear and put up.
The world-building was okay, could’ve been a bit better I think, and it took a little too long for me to get to the point of where it was hard to put the book down (but I did get there, so POINT).
The way the ending closed up, I’m content not continuing the series and leaving it with this book. As much as happened at the ending, I don’t feel the need to read the rest.

Original review: This audiobook was great! The story was a bit confusing at first as the reader bounces between timelines, but it doesn’t take too long to get adjusted.

I love books that take place in fantasy schools and contain competitions — so this book was perfect. We follow Mia as she searches for The Church (a school of deadly assassins).

I will definitely be continuing this series and looking forward to learning more of the mysteries the author has left unanswered 👀.

Reread 2023: I reread the physical copy this time & loved it just as much! I felt the betrayals even deeper knowing what is to come next. Such addictive writing and eloquent world building.

I really liked this book. It’s not perfect by any means. I did find the footnotes annoying and skipped most of it. I also found the sexual scenes in here unnecessary since those involved are supposed to be minors (late teens). I like myself some good smut but not when it involves teens. It’s kinda gross actually. Buuuuut with that being said, I really liked the characters and the story. The action scenes are kind of wild and unrealistic, but that’s exactly what I was looking for when I selected this.
