A fascinating document not only as an early pass at / into a novel but as a testament to Camus’s process. Here he allows himself lengthy passages of description and seemingly endless run-ons, while his footnotes and addenda point to how his mind was expanding and circling the material as he wrote it, hoping to come back later. He may not have wanted it published in its current state, and it definitely feels like the plot itself is barely underway by the time it ends, but I’m so glad it was published.
