the more the year goes on, the harder it gets for me to know what to rate things. not sure if it's apathy or if i'm not trusting myself.

but this was solid. i don't think i enjoyed it as much as the first book in the series, but if you're looking for a historical romance that is a bit less fluffy than something like tessa dare i think you will like this series. there's a sense of intrigue or adventure in each of them, and the heroines are kick ass. i think the hero in this one was a little.. meh for me, which kept this from being something i truly loved. i also felt that the initial set up was a little confusing with regards to timeline.

don't regret reading this though! and interested to see what francesca's book is like.

love a strong female character !

I was captivated from beginning to end. I believe I read it through the night, I couldn't get enough, and I was eager to experience their first sex scene; which didn't come for awhile but was well worth it. I just loved how Cecelia loved to eat desserts and the description Byrne gave throughout the book from the way she eats the truffles in front of Ramsey to the power and tension Ramsey holds in his body from not touching Cecelia. Granted, this book (with the Vicar of Vice) was not as thrilling as the first in the series (with the Terror of Torcliff), but what sequel really is? But Ramsey and Cecilia had their own kind of passion that kept me reading. I cannot wait to read the third and final (I believe) in this series.

This book is a bit silly and melodramatic, but that translated into a fast paced, quick read. I had some issues with the villain reveal and the broodiness of the MMC (so much of his arc is just 'can a man admit that he's wrong, sometimes?') but overall I enjoyed reading it despite its flaws. I'm here for the cringe language choices and chaos plotting!!

Don't even f*cking look at me oh my god.

Cassius Ramsay is Lord Chief Justice and king of his world. He has made it his mission to rid the world of the blight called Miss Henrietta’s School for Cultured Young Ladies. Ramsay is convinced this front for a gambling establishment is hiding more nefarious deeds within their walls. He has always considered himself to be beyond reproach, and incorruptible. That was until he met the luscious Cecilia Teague. She challenged all of his notions of propriety and sparked life in him, something that he never considered to be missing in the first place. But the intriguing Cecilia is hiding a secret from him and from her friends.

I loved the opening scene between Ramsay and Cecilia. The temptation that Ramsay felt in her presence was so palpable. It also set the tone for the interactions between the two of them. I enjoyed the banter between them.

The school masquerading as a gambling place, which came into Cecilia’s possession after her aunt passed away, remained a mystery to me. I was never exactly sure what the purpose of the place was, and what exactly went on there. Ramsay’s single-minded quest to unmask the Scarlet Lady and rid the world of her influence, wasn’t very rational at all. I understand that the accusations against the place is indeed very despicable, but his behavior would have made more sense if he somehow had some personal stake in what is purported to have happened there. The Crimson Council and Gemma’s involvement with them also didn’t find traction for me.
The plot was a bit all over the place, with a lot of things happening, and it was sometimes hard to make the connections between everything.

I did enjoy reading the book, despite all that, and will continue with the series.

Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

All Scot and Bothered was pretty good. It’s a historical romance with mystery, suspense and a bit of action. I adored it. I love repressed, prim and proper heroes and if they’re grumpy too I’m in heaven. Cassius hit all these buttons and so much more. I loved that Cecelia was shy yet also bold when she needed to be. I loved their courtship and can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
