I wasn't familiar with Geena prior to reading this but am so glad she wrote her story as I'm not sure I would have had the opportunity to learn about her journey. She shares insight into being trans in both the Phillipines and the US during the 90s and aughts, detailing the challenges as well as the tremendous strength/talent Geena clearly had. Themes around colonialization, gender dysphoria, the modeling industry, colorism, and more.
Highly recommend.

A really good celeb memoir. The earlier sections are best. I loved the ways she talked about race in the Philippines. The book feels rushed toward the end as she lays out her post coming out accolades. Generally the book is too long.

One nice thing about adding books to your TBR and then not reading them for a while is being totally surprised when you finally pick them up. I had no idea what this was about and was immediately sucked in by Rocero's writing style and ability to weave stories with love and humour. It was honestly really nice to read a book about a trans person whose family was loving and supportive. I liked that as Geena started to lean more towards femininity, her family just accepted her and continued on with their lives.
I only wish that the later part of Geena's life (after she came out as trans) was more fleshed out. The beginning of her story leading up to there was detailed and in-depth, but it felt like the end just got rushed and didn't have the same attention as the rest. However, that was really the only downside. I loved the narrative style, it felt like a friend telling a story.

Refreshingly candid memoir of her experiences as a transgender pageant queen in her native Phillipines and her journey as a model in the US where her success was achieved at a cost because she had to hide a major part of her identity.
What really shines through is her confidence and amazing self belief that has got her through some really tough situations. Absolutely no false modesty here!
