I know plenty of people have loved this book, but I found it total drivel.
How many tropes can one book contain?
1. The abused child wise beyond her years, quoting Whitman and Shakespeare
2. The drunken, hapless father who loves her but cannot care for her properly
3. The evil, obsessed, drunken uncle who will stop her at all costs
4. The wannabe blonde screen siren with a traumatic love affair, lost baby and heart of gold
5. The Japanese fighter pilot who hates bombing people and just wants to be reunited with his lost love
6. The Aboriginal elder who knows all the secrets to life
7. The sexy Aboriginal teen who reminds the girl of Tyrone Power (ok, not a trope, but very odd!)
8. The best friend who sticks with her through thick and thin (in this case, it's a shovel, but hey, why not?)
9. A colony of whackos living in a cave in the middle of the Northern Territory, taking drugs to escape the pain of their lives
10. The journey to remove a curse and solve life's problems.

I had to skim all the pages and pages and pages of Molly talking to the sky and the sky replying.
I quite liked Boy Swallows Universe for the most part, but after reading this nonsense (and seeing all the rave reviews!), I'm not inclined to read anything else by Trent Dalton.

It's not you, it's me. This is a lovely, dreamy, tragic kinda book. And beautifully written. But i wasn't engaged, and I struggled to get through. I can understand why some would love it. And the cover is gorgeous. Set in Darwin during WW2, young Molly heads into the bush when Darwin is bombed, to find Longboat Bob, who'd put a curse on her family generations ago. I enjoyed Boy Swallows Universe years ago, and I'm enjoying the BSU TV series. I'm not sure if I'll read Lola - maybe in a few years' time.

Trent writes so vividly you almost feel part of the book. I really enjoyed this while it is an unusual story I found it easy to become engrossed in the characters

3.5
I feel sooo rough giving a low rating to such a beautifully written and whimsically poetic and mystical book but the pacing was a bit of a tough slog and made it hard work for most of the story. Perhaps if I wasn't so eager to work through my To-Read list I would've given it the time and space it deserved, and a higher rating. Trent Dalton is clearly a very, very gifted writer.

I absolutely loved this book, such a colourful tale of tragedy and adventure. Daltons writing is extraordinarily vivid and rich, just beautiful.
