This book blew my tiny brain to pieces. It was so incredibly written, Trent Dalton is such a talented story teller, like man does he have a way with words. It was filled with light and darkness and so much hope, especially at the end. This book lived up to the high bar Trent set himself with Boy Swallows Universe and I can’t wait for his next release! ⁣

This was no where near as good as Boy Swallow’s Universe (no surprise since that’s probably the best fiction book I’ve ever read). It was still entertaining and the writing is still wonderful. The book gave me huge Deltora Quest vibes which I enjoyed but the plot was pretty simple. I didn’t find myself in love with Molly like I was with Eli. I also felt like it was trying too hard to continuously reference Australian plants, animals, landscapes etc. which got a bit annoying.

A love letter to Australia is an understatement.
This book bleeds a different type of story telling. Trent Dalton is on another level. His imagination and captivating writing is so beautifully brilliant - it’s a homely feeling with every page that I turn, and I am nowhere near Darwin.
Take a bow, Trent. Absolute class.

DNF. I wanted to love this book after reading Lola and BSU but maaaaaate. Daltons books have such a repetitive writing style? The grave digger girl, the girl on the lam, a characters name written one hundred times per paragraph. The beautiful descriptions have me zoning out cause nothing is happening. Disappointed but give the narrator of the audiobook a prize for helping me get through 7 chapters.

I was so excited for this book; Boy Swallows Universe was one of my favourite books last year, the cover is absolutely gorgeous and the blurb teased me with colourful characters and a whimsical and exciting adventure.

Reading it though I felt mostly a lot of boredom. I didn’t find it engaging at all. There was an interesting story but it mostly just felt hinted at between pages and pages and pages of flowery descriptions of plants and actions and repetitions to build atmosphere.

I didn’t find any of the characters especially interesting or relatable, honestly I didn’t find them fleshed out to the point of even having a “feel” for them. A generic Japanese man who doesn’t speak much English, a generic pretty lady with a sad past, and a kid who is at some moments a super genius poet and others a bogan slang expert?

The book took a looong time to get going, and it was honestly a struggle to keep going for about the first third until the story actually started. I think at least 30% of this book could be removed and it would only be improved.

A lot of the adventures they got into demanded extreme suspension of disbelief too. Were they symbols? How did they keep walking smack into weird cult-like gangs?

Overall I didn’t DISlike the book. There were some good ideas and the writing was often very nice. But I also didn’t really like it.
