This was my most anticipated read for 2020 (the first book I've ever preordered I was THAT keen) and I'm so disappointed that it didn't hit the mark for me. I don't even know why. All I do know is that it became a real chore for me to read to the point that I was skipping chunks of text just to finish it

DID NOT FINISH

DNF - couldn’t get into it, might not be my writing style because the long descriptions and constant references to Darwin got a bit much.

Some beautiful prose but also sometimes you can tell when a book is written for a movie option and that really got in the way of my full enjoyment

This book read like something to be studied in Literature 101. Trying so hard to be artful that the meaning was lost in metaphors and symbolism. I often had to stop reading to think about what was actually happening in the story. Also, I don't think simply quoting the greats like Shakespeare puts you on par with the greats.

I'm not sure why I stuck with this, I had to force down every page right to the end.
