Wat een goed verhaal. Waanzinnig geschreven en goed uitgedacht. Een verhaal met een groot avontuur. Wel eentje waar je je hoofd goed bij moet houden, anders raak je het draad in dit verhaal snel kwijt. Maar als je er eenmaal goed inzit, wil je niks anders dan doorlezen.

This is one of the most beautiful books I've read in a long time. The story is dark, but also filled with light, thanks to snatches of humor and a most magical setting. It made me want to get on the next plane to Darwin, Australia, and lose myself in that gorgeous landscape. Where else can you find a sky that talks back? And it's the night sky that never lies; the day sky that misleads. This author has a completely unique look at the world.
12-year-old Molly Hook is destined to become an iconic character, certainly one I will not ever forget. So determined, plucky, and never wavering from her goal, no matter how tough the road gets. I would love to see how her life turns out when she grows up. But maybe I will just have to imagine it myself.
I rarely give books five stars, but this one deserves it.

I was very hesitant to read this book because of how much I loved Boy Swallows Universe, but somehow, Trent Dalton managed to do it again!
This book is a national treasure. It weaves so many real stories into this beautiful work of fiction.
There’s no better way to describe it than this line in the blurb, “it is a love letter to Australia and an ode to the art of looking up”.

1. Carry all you own, but own all that you carry.
2. The heart is warmed by warming the hearts of others.

A little bit too unbelievable and easy to put down. By the end on reflection it is a great story, but probably a little disappointing; sadly.
Waar in A Boy Swallows a Universe de hoofdrol was weggelegd voor een jongetje, is het zijn tweede boek de beurt aan een twaalfjarig meisje dat haar vader en oom helpt bij het scheppen van graven in Darwin in het noorden van Australië, waar een goudkoorts gaande is tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog.
"Darwin dreams in drink and sweat. Warm beer and tol. Fat-bellied fist fighters and men who piss in buckets beneath their bar stools. Empty car bodies left abandoned in the streets outside town by empty man who shot themselves dead inside them."
Molly Hook ("Molly's always six feet deep in dirt and dead folks") houdt van lezen en poëzie, iets dat niet gedeeld wordt door haar vader en oom -- dit komt van moeders zijde, maar die gaat al vrij snel dood in het boek. Allemaal de schuld van een oude Aboriginal vloek die over haar grootvader van moeders zijde is uitgesproken, denkt Molly.
Hele gesprekken voert ze met de lucht -- de day sky ("Run, Molly, run") en de night sky, waar die Molly proberen tegen de ander op te zetten.
Na een Japans bombardement op Darwin begint een soort van walk-about, diep de noord-Australische bush in, op zoek naar de Aboriginal in kwestie.
In dit alles wordt ze bijgestaan door een Japanse piloot die uit de lucht is komen vallen en een actrice die het liefst richting Hollywood zou vertrekken , en achtervolgd door haar oom, die zo zijn eigen spoken in het verleden heeft.
Prachtige (bloemige) beschrijvingen van de ruige outback en een hartverscheurend portret van een dapper en veels te optimische meisje op de verkeerde plek.
Enige minpuntje is dat sommige van randpersonages wel een beetje aan de karikaturale kant zijn.
