3.5, probably. I can see Netflix making a semi-decent movie I would watch during this damn pandemic out of it...

Pretty funny and different
Sometimes I liked this book and sometimes I found it annoying (sometimes I found the biting, angsty teen humor annoying). Parts of it were super predictable and then I’d be pleasantly surprised. The listing after a beautiful girl was annoying, but I’m glad the author addressed the concept of buying a gift and expecting physical reward for it. I feel on the fence about the way things ended with Maddie; maybe it was life-like, but at the same tome the ending was disappointing. The characters seemed mature enough that they could have had a conversation about what went down.
Great story
This book is definitely a must read. It's refreshing and riveting. The character is not likeable at times. He is brash, cynical, and judgemental. But Norris is real which makes him relateable. He uses his wit and angst to protect himself from a world that isn't always kind, especially to a young black male. The story is told through Norris' perspective when he moves from Canada to Austin, Texas. He hates everything about Texas until he doesn't. The story is about his journey and the people he meets along the way. It's about rasicm, suicide, depression, immigration, divorce, not fitting in, messing up, consequences, and having to face your mistakes. It's deep and personal and utterly riveting. This book is definitely worth the read.

Norris Kaplan moves to Austin, Texas from Montreal, Canada. He struggles with the heat and with trying to fit in. He relies on his assumptions about his peers instead of actually getting to know them. He doesn't expect to fall for a girl or to make several new friends.
NC HBOB selection 2022-2023
This was really just OK. It did get better as it went on but overall, I wasn't terribly impressed. Norris is a bit of a jerk and everyone around him just ignores it for most of the book.

rating: 3.5 stars
starts off slow but really kicks into gear about halfway through! while norris’s constant snark can be grating (ESPECIALLY towards the beginning), and some plot points are cliche to the point of being rough to get through, i’m glad i finished this.
as norris begins to take his life in austin more seriously, so does the book — leading to some powerful, heartfelt moments between characters in its final chapters. PLUS (and i won’t elaborate as to avoid spoilers) multiple characters face real, lasting consequences for things i’ve often seen brushed off in other stories. really a great read :-)

This is a cute, light hearted (mostly) summer read
The core group of characters are very well developed, but outside of those 5 or 6, everybody else doesn't have much depth unfortunately
Doesn't use the miscommunication trope, so that's cool, but I wasn't expecting the sheer amount of straight romance (Norris and Liam get together in my headcanon that's all)
