In these days of growing racial tensions, this is an important book as it witnesses how 20th CENTURY society could turn its back on an entire group of people and decide that they were no longer worthy of status as human beings. This was far from my first introduction to Holocaust history and I still found it astonishing and disheartening, that humanity could stoop this low.

This book definitely deserved the win of Canada Reads 2019.

If I felt it was right to rate this book, I would give it 5 stars, but it just doesn't. I don't wish to comment but to reflect so that is what I will do. I recommend this book, especially for its insight on the aftermath of Max's liberation, something I knew less about for some reason.

This book deserved to win CBC Canada’s reads and any other literary awards it has won.
It’s a moving and compelling story told as if directly speaking to you. No matter how much you know about the holocaust, I promise you will learn much you didn’t know.
Yes, I cried several times during this book, but it is not depressing. Eisen writes with hope and compassion and love. First account narratives of the holocaust are precious and we owe it to their suffering to read and learn from them.

This man is my hero because he never gave in. He did it. Remarkable story under dismal circumstances. Very eye-opening. Would love to see/hear him speak.

What a beautiful and tragic story of survival, strength and family. Eisen's memoire was well-written and imparted great lessons of tolerance, education and perseverance. I am grateful just for the opportunity to read this book and to learn the lessons that Eisen has spent many years advocating in his public speaking.

A highly-recommended read!
