I typically enjoy psychological novels that explore a characters alienation and the inner workings of their mind. However this one just didn’t click with me. I found it messy, with random event after random event. It was quite boring to be honest.
Hunger was certainly an experience. To read the train of thought of someone as the main character should never be an easy task. With constant questions of whats really happening and what is not, it is a bit confusing at first.
The mental decline was very interesting, yet left me feeling no sympathy for the main character at all.
I would recommend this to people who like stories that dont feature a lot of dialogue, since this is truly just inner monologue for the most part.
This review is my first impression having finished the book, might be edited when I had more time to think over things.

I really don't know what to think of this book
It is written extremely well, it has such style and tension. It is deeply psychological but also real and tangible.
I love the starving artist trait, a writer struggling for his daily bread and I love how literally Hamsun took this. The narrator with his morals and personality captivated me.
The book however was very uncomfortable, the narrator goes from euphoria to utter despair, a disturbing bleakness that is almost hard to read but impossible to put down.
It is a book I feel I could both 3, 4 or 5 too and be entirely justified in my decision so I opted for the middle of four. Although I don't think I will reread it anytime soon I will certainly remember it.
