Giving Chase by Lauren Dane

Giving Chase kicks off Lauren Dane's Chase Brothers series. Maggie has been beaten down emotionally by her mother and it means she's completely unaware of what she has to offer the world. No fear - buddy Liv will give her a makeover and the guys will take notice. The Chase brothers are the town hotties and have women falling all over themselves (and acting pretty catty) to snag one.

This is one of those audiobooks that I listen to over and over... but it still has some things that don't quite sit well with me. I think the biggest drawback to this is that, in order to set up for later events in the book/series - Maggie dates another guy, then oldest brother Shane, before finally finding her match with Kyle. It's 35% into the book before they have their first date. This doesn't leave a lot of time for them to build a relationship and there's a lot of time jumping.

Maggie's mom, sister, and several of the women in town are OTT immature and catty in how they behave. Like not even remotely realistic. I'd say it was like high school, but even my teens weren't like this.

I do like when Kyle & Maggie are together. Kyle is a sweetheart and they have good chemistry. Several steamy sex scenes bring heat to this book. There's also a short but well done suspense element when Maggie is kidnapped by her stalker ex. I enjoyed the ending and the epilogue is so sweet.

Narration:
Aletha George is great. I love her narrations. She does a great job of giving everyone a distinct voice. She's also a master at really packing a punch with the emotional parts. There's still spots where I cry every time I listen.

CW: There's a fairly descriptive kidnapping and sexual assault sequence.

Really good audio book. Nice story, with a predictable villain, and a wedding at the end. Reminded me of a soap opera. I liked it!

A new Author i love!!!!

Being British, i have always wanted to visit the states... not new york or Vegas but the south... After watching the Hart of Dixie series over and over again... i admit i am slightly obsessed.....

This book encompass's all that i love... family Drama, a community, lifelong friendships, dances and get together for the community... And i listened to the audio... i love the twang!!!!

The characters are multi - dimensional, and the story was amazing.... A huge 5 stars from me... considering i usually read paranormal or fantasy, i rarely love normal romances this much....

It's a 3.5 star book really with the corny things that came out of Kyle's mouth (no hot guy should be that dorky! LOL!), but I'm rounding up because it was a nice long Lauren Dane book! I can't wait to read about Shane. LOVE Polly and can't wait to see what happens in Petal next!

It wasn't terrible. It just wasn't very good. In some parts there was too much conflict/too many hurdles for the heroine to overcome. And other parts were boring and could have been cut. The heroine was too perfect for words. So were her friends, her boyfriend, and her boyfriend's family. And of course the villains were overly villainous. I like characters and story that I can relate to and sympathize with not roll my eyes at.

Well, this series didn't really start off with a bang. I failed to understand how a heroine could go from swooning over one brother and then doing a switcheroo by loving another. What's up with that? I mean, sure, she's entitled to change her mind but come on. Why can't you just get to the point of the story which was Maggie and Kyle? Why bother set me up to fall in love with the idea of Maggie and Shane only to let it all turn to dust? [Sigh] Don't get me wrong, Kyle is no slouch; I just didn't like the build up and I felt like I was duped. Anyway.

There is something about Ms. Dane's narrative that didn't sound like she's a natural at telling a story. As a result, the first book to this series was hardly enjoyable and far from remarkable. There are hundreds of authors writing hundreds of books in this genre; you'd have to offer more to the readers in order for us to come back. I'm a little worried that my July Addiction choice would not end well.

Maggie and Shane's angle didn't really make sense to me. It was like a trial and error of sort that ended conveniently...okay. To be honest, the whole story felt like a filler instead of a novel. Is it possible to feel about a book like that? The story is about them and yet, it felt like it wasn't. Not really. I'd hope that the story will get better but it didn't.

I also had a problem with Maggie's mother and sister. Their sharp tongues and vitriol behaviours were unreal. I'm sorry, but that kind of childish public display of belittling only happens in high school. In fact, they both sounded like queen bees of the quad if you ask me. And ohhhhhhmyyyyGod. Are they immature!

VERDICT: Since this was one of Lauren Dane's earlier work, I'm going to ignore how amateurish the writing was. I'm going to persevere and continue on with this series and see how well her writing has improved. Overall, this book is your below-average romantic novel. The book was passable enough - if you're looking for a temporary enjoyment. Not magnificent by any stretch of imagination but it's good enough to distract you even for just a few seconds.
