A good concept and good debut. Lags a bit in the middle and could have finished stronger, but worth the read!

An insightful look into the lived experience of a woman suffering from dementia. Maud, the unreliable narrator, is convinced her friend Elizabeth is missing. While it is clear from the outset that this isn't actually the case, Maud's persistence is perhaps triggered by a subconscious need to resolve the unsolved mystery of her sister's dissapearence 70 years ago. The narrative swings from present to past as Maud attempts to solve the mystery and navigate daily life as her memory degenerates.

I admired the skill of the writing in this book more than I enjoyed reading it. The protagonist is an old lady with dementia and the author does an excellent job of writing about the world as she experiences it, confusing moments and all.

The timeline jumps between the present day, where she's preoccupied with finding her "lost" friend Elizabeth and flashbacks to her childhood when her sister went missing. The twists weren't all that surprising but the story was good though quite hard to enjoy given the subject. I think this was made harder by my Grandma's current poor health, and echoes of her situation coming through in the story.

While I loved the concept of raising awareness for dementia sufferers and how frustrating it can be to lose oneself, listening to this gave me a bit of a headache as it was far too long. This is definitely better as a book and not for Audible - you lose track of Maud's meandering. And while it is based on the tragic circumstances of her sister's disappearance - I actually ended up losing focus over who she was actually talking about after a while. A good effort but better to read!

Hit a little bit too close to home for me, so I think I'm going to not leave a rating and move on to something else
