Made me desperately want to climb a mountain, and also desperately not want to climb a mountain.

Need to add this to my list of books to actually read. The audiobook version was kind of awful due to narrator. He used different accents when quoting people in the book and it was so awful it was borderline unbearable. The stories themselves were great, I love everything that Krakauer writes.

Entertaining but underwhelming if you expect another Into Thin Air or Into the Wild (as the cover misleadingly suggests)
It's hard to pinpoint the genius of Jon's writing. The strong sense of "being there" definitely helps. His climbing stories also seem accessible to non-climbers without boring or condescending to climbers. He transcends narrative, digging into motivations and consequences, without condemning the actors. This collection is a good starting point for his writing (and alpine adventure in general). Even cover-to-cover it's less of a commitment than Into Thin Air, and of course one can always put it down after a couple of articles. There's no reason not to try the first, Eiger Dreams itself.

I enjoyed this one, Krakauer writes fascinatingly about such exploits in an accessible and informative way. Stories are somewhat dated now but do still have relevance.

Honestly, I really don't care what Krakauer writes about, I will probably read it. He draws people and the mountains so well that the reader feels as if he knows these people intimately and is right there on the mountain with them. This series of essays is quite dated, but still a fascinating look into the wacky people who dare to climb the world's tallest mountains.
