My first five-star review of 2012! What a fabulous book: a hard-boiled Steinbeck. Chandler truly is a fantastic writer that pulls you through his story with succinct yet incisive dialogue and churning plots. I liked this infinitely more than the Elliot Gould movie and significantly more than his Big Sleep novel. Do yourself a favor, read this book at the earliest opportunity!

This is certainly Chandler’s most cohesive novel, incredibly tight from start to finish with no awkward tangents to the plot, like some of the earlier novels. However, it is not nearly as funny and the dialogue does not seem as sharp or fresh.

Definitely the top end of noir detective fiction, and well written. I tore through it quickly to figure out what happened, lots of twists and moving parts that connect satisfyingly. It’s hard to give more than 3 stars (maybe 2) because of the unending casual misogyny and racism, and to lesser degrees homophobia and antisemitism (less only because it wasn’t relevant to the plot).
