A sweet Own Voices book about an autistic girl trying to change her small Scottish town. It was a bit difficult to read because it mirrored some of my own trauma as an Autistic person.

I loved Addie so much and resonated strongly with her character. Very accurate discussion of what masking feels like, and of sensory issues, between Addie and her other autistic sister, and I liked the exploration of the ‘eccentric old lady who lives in the woods and everyone is wary of’ trope. Plus, witches and social justice…not much not to love here!

I love the story and the Autism representation is great! Definitely something I'd recommend to children and adults alike. Whether you're looking to learn about what it's like to be Autistic, or if you want to read something you can relate to as an Autistic person. Just be aware that
dealing with bullies and ableism
are elements of the plot.

I love this book so much. I don't think I'll ever be able to put into words just how much I love it. This is the book I needed as a child. This is the book I want all little autistic girls to have. Reading about Addie was amazing and heartbreaking in a good way. I have never before felt so well seen and represented in anything before. I have known since my diagnosis that theoretically I am not alone with how I experience things and how I feel. I have never had this kind of prove that it is normal. That it is just the way mine and many other people's brains work.

This is a cute story about a girl finding out her town used to have witch hunts and trying her best to get her town to acknowledge that and put up a memorial for them. It's a fun story that I would recommend to kids based purely on that. It is also so much more than that though. Reading Addie's story teaches you so many important things. Wether you're neurodivergent and it shows you that you're not alone and are okay the way you are, or you're neurotypical and it shows you how differently we experience the world from you and the difficulties that come with that. I hope and believe that this book will teach everyone to be more compassionate towards themselves and others.

honestly I should start reading more books for younger readers! the language is so simple and easy, but addie's voice was nevertheless incredibly vivid and whole and it made me so viscerally angry at times that I nearly reached into the book to slap a couple of people. 3.75 stars simply because it's not groundbreaking writing to me I guess (not a criticism, just an observation, plus I'm older than the intended audience) but I really really really loved it. so much that I'm writing a review, which I never do.

even though the book is in first person and relatively short, each character is fully defined and fleshed-out and every relationship is, although quite straightforward, incredibly beautiful and touching <3

I thoroughly enjoyed this book more than I thought I would.
nearer the end of the book when Emily ruins Addies thesaurus caused me to cry from there till the end of the book. The raw emotions discussed from a young point of view from an autistic person really struck me as an autistic person.
if I could rate this higher than a 5/5 I would
