this is a really hard book to rate. I don't recommend reading this if you've recently experienced any sort of sexual trauma or abuse. rather than plot-based, this is more character-based, following a sri lankan woman who unravels the consequences of her childhood trauma and how it haunts her throughout her life.

it is so beautifully written—probably some of the prettiest writing i've ever read. however, it does get a bit flowery at times, where i just speed-read through some parts. it's also a story that is based on memory, and so the plot is meant to be jumbled and not trustworthy (whether you enjoy that is up to you).

it's also hard to find the main character likable, but she's also recovering something so horrible that's happened to her, so you keep reading to unveil what happens but you might really disagree with her actions and thought processes.

definitely recommend reading this when you're in a better mental state and can shoulder someone else's trauma. you're exasperated at the end but you also have to respect the beautiful writing skills.
