It's hard to give a rating to the series as a whole. I might give The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe a 5, and The Last Battle and the Horse and His Boy 1s. I think Dawn Treader is my favorite after TLTWaTW.
Besides the absolutely terrible ending to this series, great
I have been wanting to read the Chronicles of Narnia for some time. And now that I've finished them, it's a happy sadness at seeing such a magical world end. I loved it; wholly and completely. There are many elements to a series such as this that make them so popular, but Narnia was unique in it's mirroring Christian content. It was a joy to find the parallel Biblical stories within these books and how Lewis twisted them to make them magical. I was sad to see the end. The simplicity in the books is a part of the interest. Because they're for children. And because of this, it actually helped me imagine the world of Narnia with my own imagination; of my own creation. Sure, some of the films helped, but it was fun creating a world with the childish description that Lewis gave. There doesn't need to be an explanation because every child can imagine it on their own; they know what a medieval land looks like with castles, swords, and centaurs. I might be looking a bit too far into it, but I loved the opportunity to be a part of creating this amazing world. I must say, and this is small note and is quite understandable, that I don't appreciate the sexism. As adventuress as I was when I was a kid, I would have wanted to be a part of the action, not the one told to stay behind. But it makes sense considering the time that Lewis wrote it. Would it have been so successful if it were written now? As a feminist, I should surely hope not. But I love the classics and this goes on my list of imaginary lands that I would love to visit. Would I probably have to help battle evil in Narnia because I'm a Daughter of Eve? You bet. I am so ready for it.

Take any chance you get to read this aloud. It's a pleasure to share this with younger readers, the language is rich and complex but still accessible. Some people may be put off by the somewhat overt religious references, but younger readers will not pick this up and really to me these are the classic stories of creation myths rather than touting some specific religious views.
The characters are beautifully complex and situations they are in speak to all children today. A true delight.
