This is a short story quite to my liking, plot-wise — a little bit creepy, a little mysterious, and with a proper resolution. The build-up was a little longwinded, but apart from that it was quite readable.

Two short stories from Gaskell are included in this. The first, "The Old Nurse's Story" is a fun little gothic tale, but not very insightful or impactful. The second, "Curious, If True" is all-around forgettable.

Qui siamo nel classico gothic/horror. Gli elementi ci sono tutti. E distribuiti egregiamente. Ma, come anche Dickens non mancò di fare notare, il finale è un po' piatto rispetto al crescendo delle pagine che lo precedono, e io personalmente avrei sviluppato un po' di più il racconto perché ha la capacità di tenerti incollata alle pagine. O chissà, forse è proprio il suo essere "rapido" a mantenere alta la tensione. Avrei voluto dare tra 3 e 4 stelle, ma fra le due vada per il 3 perché mi è piaciuto, e probabilmente ha contribuito alla tradizione gothic/horror che troviamo ancora oggi, ma non mi ha esaltata troppo. E se posso dare 4 stelle a un romanzetto a cuor leggero, non posso darlo a un "classico" da cui mi aspetto di più. Le stelline per me sono sempre in base al genere di quel libro, la sua tradizione, a cosa mira ecc. Il criterio non può essere uguale. In ogni caso, io consiglio Il Racconto della Vecchia Balia. Fondamentali le note della traduttrice e dell'opera alla fine.
