I am so happy I finally read another Rachel Harrison book. Itโs been way too long. If you guys have been following me, you know she quickly became one of my favourite authors. Such sharp teeth was another absolute banger for me.
One night, Rory is on her way home when she hits an animal with her car. When she gets out, a dead deer lays on the road & she realises that the animal she hit, was a wolf. After a useless try to outrun the animal, she gets mauled, but when she wakes up the next morning, her side is completely fine, only oozing a little bit of silver - Until the next full moon.
I really liked the fmc Rory, but that is the case with most of Rachel Harrisonโs main protagonists. Rory has this kind of โtake no shitโ attitude, that was really fun to read. The way she was rather sarcastic & unserious, but still really likeable. I liked the relationship between her & her sister & the romantic backstory with her crush from back in school.
The supernatural part was the best thing for me though. The journey Rory goes through, while finding out she is a Werwolf, the way she doesnโt believe it at first & how her craving for meat & her supernatural strength bleeds over into her day to day life. I am not really a fan of gore, but with the way her transformation & feeding were described in this book, I really vibed with it context wise. The way her transformation was described reminded me of the show โHemlock Groveโ & I always thought the animal kind of slipping off itโs human body was an amazing concept. I also really was a fan of the way, Rory tried to prepare for what was to come & the way she at first denied & than learned to accept that this is going to be her life now.
I also loved the kind of power trip, Rory had when she became a wolf. Especially with her past & the way she felt helpless around her mothers ex boyfriend, the way she accepts her new identity & grows into her power & what she can accomplish with her newfound abilities was really satisfying .
As always, Rachel Harrison gave us a banger of a book & I am just utterly obsessed with her mind, her characters & her way of writing. The way she talks about girlhood & the trauma that comes with it as well as domestic abuse & pregnancy doubts, all wrapped up in pretty, blood smeared bow will never fail to entertain me.
Graphic: Body horror, Gore, Blood, Vomit
I am actually so sad, that I didn't love this book from Rachel Harrison, as I loved "Cackle" and the "Black Lamb". But oh, God, this book could be studied in a module under the title "A typical American Novel". The story itself could be good, it is very well written as always, but the characters psychology is cut in a half with old good "a good man and therapy will fix you, girl!". Literally. Our main character only becomes happy and fulfilled in life, after she forgets everything she ever achieved and decides to settle down in the middle of nowhere and have babies with some guy with who she only ever talked about music. Then, there supposed to be her family and I will be honest, as much as Rachel Harrison must have done her research about people who went through trauma, the whole idea, that you become fixed and your life moves from this point once you forgive, once you accept and move one, it isn't the case. Trauma is like a disability with which you live daily - it is kind of like arthritis with its flares. And try to tell a person who suffer from arthritis to just feel better, smile more and forget about the pain.
I am basically disappointed with this book. The werewolf parts seemed to be an after-thought: in comparison to her other novels, where they were elevating the plot, impacting it in a meaningful way, here the whole thing about werewolves is basically useless and the myth is very much not explored. Being a werewolf is in direct comparison to trauma and pregnancy, the lack of control. To rage. I just wish there was more to it, like how werewolves also represent freedom, breaking up from the mold of the society (trust me, Rory is not doing that, our girlie is a hallmark heroine and she will drop her high career for a boy if he likes). There is something to say about the class, privilege - a lot. And I wish there was more to it
Then there is the character of Mia, who had way more personality and humour and love towards Rory than Ian and his boringness (but as we know, boring men are the best in this sort of stories, because a wild woman needs a stable man to calm her down and pump her with babies, before he will tell her that she can forget about owning her bank account). Scarlett and Rory's mum - awful people. Ash is absolutely not an archetype of a mother, because as someone who has friends in long relationships with partners that are obsessed with them and who has many family members that have babies - people like Ash only leave the house while the baby is 10 years old and can wipe its own ass. Not before.
So no. A bitter disappointment for me.
