This book was recommended to me on Kindle Unlimited, and I went in with no expectations but came out absolutely delighted. Under no circumstances should you enter this thinking that it will be faithful to the genre of regency romance, but in fact it flaunts the genre in a way that can only be attributed to a deep love and understanding of said genre by the author. One review called it "gleefully anachronistic" and that is exactly the right attitude. It is queer and it is a *safe* queer read. If you would like some more happy-ending-but-still-acknowledges-the-danger, I recommend going more towards KJ Charles, but given that I have exhausted her catalogue, I was absolutely thrilled to find that there are plenty of other authors taking up the mantle of queer historical romance.
Is this literature? No. Did it make me laugh out loud several times while reading this? Yes. I also sent screenshots to at least three people.
It's easy for the meta, genre savvy kind of humor to get old, but I can honestly it was perfect. The tone and the style was exactly what I needed out of this book, nothing more. If you enjoy a silly romantic romp through a country side with even sillier characters, absolutely give this a read.

This book is gloriously ridiculous in the best possible way and I adored every moment of it. Alexis Hall serves up a Regency romance that’s over-the-top, unapologetically campy, and somehow still manages to be sweet and swoony beneath the madness. I laughed and rolled my eyes (affectionately of course) throughout the story and cannot recommend it enough.
Fabulous and Funny Rom-Com
Alexis Hall is fast becoming one of my favorite writers. With sharp wit and detail, Hall drew me in from the first pages and kept me laughing until the end. Hopefully there will be a sequel.
