Everything I could say really adds up to what an absolute joy this book is!

However, I'm also on Goodreads where I like to record my thoughts for myself and perhaps a handful of others that might stumble upon this review. So I think I will say more.

There is so much to adore about this book. It's been a long time since I've felt just pure happiness reading a story and an even longer time when I remember actually laughing while reading a romantic comedy. The banter in this book is top-notch. Every interaction flows so incredibly well that I sometimes forgot I was even reading and that I wasn't actually hearing the character's voices.

I loved the dynamic Valentine and Bonny had and I was so easily sucked in and invested in their relationship from the start.

I was reading this as an ebook and about 75% of the way through I went ahead and and bought myself a physical copy so I can see it on my shelf and smile when I see it.

this started off well, it had potential and funny banter but i quickly got annoyed by the twins' disposition to blame all their woes on valentine, a man who was actually quite decent and didn't deserve all the theatrical name-calling. (yes, it may be satire but not if it's at the expanse of a single character)

also, arabella. the worst character ever. i couldn't stand her or even understood how bonny could love such a vain airhead, why peggy simped after her or why should valentine give her a chance.

This book was exhausting. The miscommunication trope was used a hundred times, Valentine is overly vilified for no reason, Belle made me want to pluck my own eyes out with a fork, and everyone is inconceivably stupid for comedic effect. Well, I WAS NOT AMUSED. I was frustrated. Flabbergasted. I read the worst bits of this on the train and it had me rolling my eyes so often people were giving me weird looks. Can Alexis Hall write? Yes, and beautifully. But stunning prose could not save this train wreck of a novel. EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM IN THIS NOVEL COULD BE SOLVED WITH A SIMPLE CONVERSATION. Valentine could’ve strolled up to his mum and been like, ‘Do you expect me to marry miss tartleton?,’ and she’d be like ‘Lmao no do whatever you want idc,’ and THAT WOULD BE IT. FFS.

I loved everything about this book from start to finish. From characters, to the plot line, to the ending.

I enjoyed the way Hall mixed more language with period phrases and wording. It hit a sweet spot between being accessible to the modern reader without pulling you from the time period the story is set in, and provided extra humor in places as well.

The main characters were all well rounded, and in the end you can truly understand everyone’s motivation for all the misadventures that befall them. I loved the side characters as well, they were purposeful and added to the world building as well as the plot. Belle is an excellent antagonist in that her actions, while causing lots of drama and conflict for the Valentine, are understandable though humorously over the top.

Bonnie and Valentine have amazing chemistry. I love the grumpy/sunshine character pairings and this was so wonderfully executed in this book. While Bonnie and Valentine fit these descriptions their characters are by no means flat,, and both grow as characters throughout the story.

While the ending is not perhaps overly accurate to the time period it is set in, I found it to be perfectly suited to the story and enjoyable.
