Friggin page turner was so tense. I suppose it was predictable but somehow I was still really anxious and needed to know what happens next.
Quite a few plot holes too. It's one that you can read in a sitting or in a day, which is what I was looking for.

It takes a lot to make me squirm and this book did it throughout. The first few chapters were a little slow and irritating but after that it picked up tremendously. An impressive debut novel from now one of my favorite authors and incredibly dark. I think The Breakdown, her latest, is very different and I felt more empathetic for the character early one but I would definitely still recommend Behind Closed Doors.
"Behind Closed Doors" initially presented itself as a gothic thriller, promising a dark exploration of a twisted marriage. However, the narrative quickly descended into a predictable trope: the seemingly innocent bride, lured into a web of deceit by a charming yet psychopathic husband. The initial premise, hinting at a blackmail scheme, held a sliver of potential, but this element remained frustratingly underdeveloped, barely scratching the surface of its possibilities.
Unfortunately, the book's predictability was its greatest flaw. The "twists" were telegraphed from miles away, rendering any sense of suspense nonexistent. The climax, meant to be a shocking revelation, landed with a dull thud, as it was painfully obvious from the early chapters.
Furthermore, the character development felt shallow, and the emotional depth of the scenes was disappointingly superficial. The narrative lacked the necessary tension and build-up to create a truly compelling story. The promised "peak plot moment," the moment that should have seized the reader's attention and delivered a satisfying payoff, never materialized. Instead, the book meandered through a series of uninspired scenes, leaving the reader with a sense of profound disappointment. Ultimately, "Behind Closed Doors" fails to deliver on its potential, offering a predictable and ultimately forgettable reading experience."
