Wow. I was not prepared for the ending of this novel. One reason because Grace really pulled it off, secondly Esther really came through for Grace and Millie. Lastly I thought I still had a chapter to go but it was just a sample reading for another novel by the same Author.
This story is all kinds of fucked up. Jack Angel is from a saint, but to everyone except Grace he is the picture perfect husband who dotes on his loving little wife Grace. He resembles George Clooney, spoils Grace rotten a luxurious lifestyle, represents battered women of domestic abuse and has never lost a case! Grace is the perfect complimentary partner to him who gave up her career to be able to have dinner ready for when Jack comes home and spend her days gardening.
In reality once their honeymoon begins Jack reveals himself to be an evil man who only targeted Grace to be his wife within 6 months when he saw her and her younger sister, Millie, who has Down syndrome. He end goal was to be able to keep them as prisoners to use for his pleasure in torturing them to feed in their fear. He reveals his upbringing created this behavior and he killed his own mother while framing his father for it. The beautiful house he bought for Grace is a facade with much more sinister rooms like the red basement with portraits of his battered clients to line the walls that he plans to keep Millie in. Millie is aware of how bad Jack is when he pushed her down stairs on he and Graces wedding day, she helps Grace try to kill Jack by saving her sleeping pills. Grace actually pulls off the perfect plan to make it seem like Jacks murder was a suicide after losing his first big case.

Behind Closed Doors is one of those books you fly through in a single sitting—it’s tense, disturbing, and incredibly hard to put down. The pacing is sharp, the premise is chilling, and B.A. Paris does a great job building that claustrophobic sense of dread.
That said... the feminist in me struggled hard. The villain is horrifying in a very calculated, cartoonishly evil way, and the main character’s helplessness—while understandably part of the story—gets frustrating. I kept wanting her to fight back sooner, or for someone (anyone!) to notice what was happening behind the perfect facade.
It’s a solid psychological thriller if you're in the mood for something dark and fast-paced, but be prepared to yell at the book a few times. I liked it, I just didn’t love what it made me sit with.
