A few words to describe this book:

Magical, unique, and beautifully written

After receiving a letter from her sister back in China in a language, she no longer understands. Amy finds out that her mother has passed.

This book takes you on a magical journey as Amy travels back to the tiny village in China where she grew up before leaving to attend school. Not returning to Eternal Springs until now as she mourns the loss of her mother. There are different stories from Amys childhood magically and meticulously woven throughout.

Two front paws of a Golden Doodle on a fluffy blanket with a softcover book to the right and a bookmark on top of them.

THE LIGHT OF ETERNAL SPRING by Angel Di Zhang is a poignant tale about a Chinese-American photographer, Amy Hilton, who returns to her native village in China after the death of her mother. The story is beautifully written and interweaves Amy's childhood memories with her present-day journey to reconnect with her family and her cultural roots. The book's themes of family, identity, and the power of art are delicately explored and skillfully woven together.

The author's use of magical realism adds an extra layer of enchantment to the story, making it an even more captivating read. Zhang's writing is richly descriptive, transporting the reader to Amy's childhood village and immersing them in its culture and traditions. The characters are well-developed, and their emotions and motivations are portrayed in a realistic and empathetic manner. This is a touching and thought-provoking novel that explores the complexities of family relationships, the struggles of finding forgiveness after a loved one is gone.

A mostly good read, with the second half feeling stronger than the first half. The story was reminiscent of Crying in H-Mart, with the major theme being mother's death and daughter's regrets about their relationship. And food of course. And rebuilding relationship with her siblings and her father. I debated with myself about giving one more star, but "I liked it" was just about right.

"Your blindness now doesn't wipe out all your years of refusing to see"

What an absolutely beautiful story of finding home when you're not sure what counts and doing what you can to reconcile things you regret. A beautiful reminder to keep in touch with the people you love!

Aimee's husband is just such a star. The way he supports her unconditionally in some of the hardest times of her life and goes above and beyond instead of doing the bare minimum.

The ways Aimee realised how westernised she had become but still let herself enjoy them if they mattered to her really spoke to me. It's not very easy to be multicultural, especially when you might love something from this "new" culture but it clashes with what you or your parents have been raised with. As someone with a parent from South Asia but born and raised in Europe, these are 100% things I experience so much.

I will definitely carry this story in my heart with incredible warmth. There are so many lessons to learn and everything was written so beautifully.
