my favourite of this author, and the 1st one that got me addicted to his work

While I believe the earlier (shorter) books in the series were better, this one is still a fun read (albeit mildly patronizing at times and with more filler than necessary. I understand why it captured my interest in the 7th grade (I wanted to be Indiana Jones AND a Marine Biologist) and I understand why a decade and a half has made it less enjoyable for me.

It's one of those books though, if you like Clive's novels, and if you've read any of his others, this one does exactly what you'd expect.

:: Previous Review - 5 stars (2003)::
This was the first Clive Cussler novel I read. I was in the 7th grade and for once found a book that didn't bore me to tears. My middle school librarian was ecstatic.

As it was the first of his I read and I was a 7th grader, I absolutely adored it. I do think I might circle back around one day to re-read it with a better informed opinion.

I wasn't a Dan if this book. I found the female characters to be written really ridiculously and in a slightly sexist way. The plot was all over the place as well.

I tried, I really did, but this just isn't my kind of novel. After reading a few chapters, I could see how some people may find this kind of action/adventure exciting, but it just was not interesting to me. My ten-year-old picked it up, read the cover, said, "cool, pirates" and then absconded with the book to his room. I was happy to give it up to him and will likely not try and track it down in the black hole that is his bedroom. Now, THAT's an adventure!
funny tense fast-paced
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

I've decided to review every book I read in 2021.
This book is fast and alright. A bit sexist sometimes. Lots of violence.

First Cussler I've read. Fairly predictable, but it did move pretty quickly. If you are looking for a good beach read, this is it.

My second Cussler book. I really enjoy his books!

Well paced adventure featuring Dirk Pitt and the NUMA team.
After rescuing some archaeologists, Dirk and Al Giordino find themselves tangled up with a group of antiquity thieves.
There's no secret organisation trying to take over or destroy the world in this one, and the story benefits from that.

Good cast of supporting characters and the tension is kept up throughout the book.

Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino are swept into an adventure involving Aztec/Mayan ruins in South America and a glorious treasure in North America. Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the ride.
