This was such an emotional read ~ this story is about a co-writing partnership who have “broken up” but come together to write a final book. You know there has been a big bust up that stopped them from talking for 4 years and arrive in present day watching them try to repair this relationship and write a book. The flashbacks helped weave this story together and it was so gorgeous and some stunning prose.

How did I learn about this book?: I think the cover must have caught my eye at a bookstore and I added it to my TBR.
The Roughest Draft was the roughest read for me. It was truly disappointing, especially after seeing Libby had listed all of its accolades. Like what was Cosmopolitan and Buzzfeed and Oprah thinking?! Additionally, I had wanted to read this book because it was written by a married couple and I thought that to be the sweetest thing ever until I read this book! They even dedicated it to each other!! SPOILERS AHEAD!"I thought I meant the promises I made on our wedding day. I'm realizing now that I didn't" (Ch. 48). I actually felt nauseous reading that quote. The cheating trope hadn't affected me as much in the past, until I read this book and realized why everyone else felt repulsed by it. "I would never cheat on Melissa" (Ch. 31). The emotional cheating felt worse than physical cheating. This felt all around icky . I considered DNF'ing, but I wanted to see if they could convince me to join the dark side and understand their yucky love story. I'm just flabbergasted that this would be the book they wanted to dedicate to each other? To each their own I guess.

After they finished writing it, they ghost each other for four years until circumstances occur that make them remember they have to write another book together as per their contract. The Roughest Read alternates between four years ago and present day and is dual POV. Four years ago MMC Nathan Van Huysen had been married, while FMC Katrina Freeling was single. Present day, Nathan is divorced and Katrina is engaged. So do what you will with that information... Oh and the plot and the reason for the end of their partnership was really dumb. In hindsight, Katrina was probably dealing with mental health issues that weren't really properly addressed... Anyways, I didn't like anyone or anything about this book LOL. I strongly doubt I would read another book by this author duo.

The yearning, the angst… so good.
It was, at times, a hard one:emotional affairs are my least favorite trope, but I appreciate the remorse .
Overall, I recommend it. Just know the premise before going into it.

I enjoyed the plot and the character but I found myself getting lost for time to time. That may be my fault, I may have not been fully immersed in the writing.
