The most interesting thing about this book is the cultural context of how it was written; the Marquis de Sade worked on it during his imprisonment and the storming of the Bastille, and his manuscript was found within the walls of his cell. The actual book is left unfinished with the ending devolving into lists of depraved sexual acts. Not much to say other than this is an interesting read for people who want to see the original source material behind Salò.

I wouldn’t say I read it, more skimmed through it. I gave it one star for Sade’s writing style. This book is purely called a classic due to its impact, but it sucks. It’s one of the most, if not the most, disgusting books I’ve ever had the displeasure to read.
Graphic: Bullying, Child abuse, Child death, Cursing, Death, Domestic abuse, Emotional abuse, Gore, Incest, Mental illness, Miscarriage, Misogyny, Pedophilia, Physical abuse, Rape, Sexism, Sexual assault, Sexual content, Sexual violence, Slavery, Torture, Violence, Blood, Excrement, Vomit, Trafficking, Religious bigotry, Death of parent, Murder, Fire/Fire injury, Sexual harassment
...
So why, then, would I still rate this 5 stars?
Because it broke something in my brain. It challenged me so deeply that it rewired my thoughts. There were moments I found myself agreeing with their philosophy, and that terrified me. But that’s the power of Sade. He’s not just fucked up. He’s brilliantly fucked up. A damn good writer, and a disturbingly persuasive philosopher.

First it was fun, then it was gross, and then it was fun again, and then it was Hostel.
Unable to review due to its incomplete state.
It uh, has its moments though.
