Simple but insightful. Funny but gut wrenching. Rob Sheffield weaves a beautiful love story set amidst a crystal clear backdrop of 90s optimism and possibilities and of course music

Sheffield is a strong writer if he does seem to be a big wimp. I don't read a lot of sad stories but his angle on grief is unforgettable. A great idea for a memoir and the music really tells a story. Highly recommended. And a quick read.

This was the first non-fiction book I’ve ever read and let me tell you I was not disappointed. Thank you Harry Styles for the recommendation ;)

Rob Sheffield captured music beautifully. Music is in the background of our lives more than we know it. It makes us feel multiple emotions and helps us connect songs to memories.

I adored all of the little playlists at the beginning of each chapters that connected with that time in his life. He could explain what each song meant to him and what memory it connected to. It also showed you the heartbreak that comes after losing the love of your life at such an early age.

This book was emotional and life changing for me. Honestly a new favourite. If you love music, then you will love this.

Touching story with an innovative style to be told. The author has imbued the story with a genuine feel that is infectious and engrossing. I thought each chapter would be a song on the mix tape in the title, but really it is a story told through the mix tapes that have entered and existed the author's life. The love story that takes most of the space is poignant caring, but the overall story feels so real and so exciting to be a part of.

First finished book of 2024!
Listened on Libby

Audiobook was read by the author so it felt even more personal than it would if I read it in my own voice.
I accidentally fell into this book. I skimmed the synopsis and determined it was kind of a "Nick and Nora's infinite playlist" type of story; I didn't realize it was an autobiographical memoir.
Heartfelt and full of love. corn corn corn! Full of corny phrases and ideas that revolve around Renee and robs  relationship as well as universal cliches that seem insincere until you remember this is a man's true feelings and not fictional characters someone is modeling after multiple aspects of their life. The cliches become true and meaningful. This book is both an ode to Renee, to music, to robs life before everything changed. Very quick read. Emotional.
Also- definitely check out the playlist on Spotify with all songs mentioned in the book. Phenomenal

This was such a touching memoir. I loved the way he recalled memories, made references to bands and music and even had a few very interesting theories thrown in which gave me a few "woah, never thought of it like that" moments. In particular, Nirvana. I never really thought about what some of the songs were about and it gave me a new perspective.

Renee sounds like she was an amazing person and they were both so lucky to have had the time they did together.

It is not an exciting read, not a lot of action but there is a lot of heart and emotion.
