A wonderful continuation to the story, filled with small moments that provide deep impact. The struggles of Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei to escape the shadows of their fathers is heartbreaking, but in contrast the comfort they find in each other is so sweet. The side characters are also starting to grow on me, especially the meddling but well-meaning homeroom teacher Lao-Xu and the dumb but loyal Wang Xu. The basketball games here tended to drag a bit for me just because they’re described in so much detail, but they’re ultimately important to the greater narrative, that last one in particular.
Gu Fei slapping Jiang Cheng’s harasser into submission as he recalled his father’s words was satisfying but sad at the time. Gu Fei wants to protect Jiang Cheng from suffering the same fate he resigned himself to, but Gu Fei’s apathy toward his own future likewise bothers Jiang Cheng. I hope these boys can continue to push each other to be the best versions of themselves. 🥺
