A bit silly and over the top but had a few Fredrik Backman vibes that I enjoyed.
This book reads exactly like a comforting family film you'd watch on a weekend afternoon. Not that it doesn't deal with serious and sad issues, but it was very easy to visualize and identify the typical components of a family drama/comedy. In other words, the plot was very predictable and many of the characters walking clichés: the emigrant tough guy who is actually a softie, the sex-worker with a heart of gold (had other issues with this character), the school bully who also suffers... Having said that, the book has some hilarious tirades and some really funny moments so it was entertaining and heartfelt and made me smile.
Such a heartwarming book! This is definitely a book for fans of Fredrik Backman.

Uno tra i libri più belli letti quest'anno. Non so se sia merito della scrittura, della trama o dei personaggi, ma non mi emozionavo così per un libro da tanto tempo!
Quando ho finito di leggerlo mi sono sentita sola. Come quando dopo un bel viaggio nel tuo paese natale ti ritrovi sull’aereo che ti riporta a casa. Sei felice dei giorni trascorsi, ma sei felice anche di tornare a casa, perché non sai se qualche giorno in più in meno avrebbero reso la vacanza migliore o peggiore. Così vivi con la tristezza di aver già finito il viaggio, ma anche con la serenità per aver vissuto dei giorni indimenticabili.

This cute, heartwarming story had a Wes Anderson movie feel with its quirky and charming main character, Danny. It also pulled at my heartstrings and choked me multiple times with it’s sad and desperate storyline. This was so good, and I can’t wait to read more Gould-Bourn novels soon!
Absurdalna historia, która momentami jest wręcz żenująca. Zastanawiałam się czy przypadkiem nie czytam książki dla młodzieży, ale przekleństwa skutecznie utwierdzały mnie w przekonaniu, że autor sam nie wiedział do końca co pisze i jaka kategoria wiekowa jest jego celem. Nie polecam na odmóżdżenie, bo pod koniec nie mogłam doczekać się już końca i nie miałam z jej czytania żadnej przyjemności.

An earnest read. Tried a little too hard to be funny at times, but overall still enjoyable. Second half felt a bit rushed, though. I think I was expecting to see more of the son's point of view; granted, he was never the main character, so it's forgiveable. Still between whether the resolution was a copout or perfectly fitting for a novel like this.
