I like that it's an #ownvoices twist on the shifting friendships genre, but I didn't find it all that engaging in general.
Just PHENOMENAL. Once I started, I didn’t stop until I was finished.
A wonderful and very human story that genuinely kept surprising me.
The facial expressions especially were so real and made everything even more exciting.

So good! A sweet story about friendship, parents, and diversity within a tight-knit Asian community. I love Jen Wang’s art, too!
Having read The Prince and the Dressmaker not too long ago, I was eager to read another book by Jen Wang so soon. While I was unable to attend the associated book club for this particular read (poor me, having to choose between two book clubs scheduled for the same time on the same night!), I heard that the very small discussion was very lively (the library host, a father, and his 8/9-year-old daughter).
I went in really only knowing the back cover, and the idea that there might be some extra magic in this story. I didn’t get the kind of magic I expected, but it was still very fulfilling. Christine and Moon, the main characters, are relatable and honest characters, as is their story – the rise and tumult of their friendship, and the circumstances and cultural influences which play into who they are and how they interact with each other and the world around them. It even brought a tear to my eye, which I never expect and rarely hope for, especially in a one-shot graphic novel. A great read for young and young-at-heart, beautifully illustrated and full of heart.
Favorite quote:
We can’t change the past. But we can learn from the way we hurt the ones we love, and try to do better. – page 188
Initial RTC from 1/24/2020: (yes I'm a little behind on my reviews... I hope to catch up sometime this weekend!)

I love Jen Wang and this book is a powerful tale of learning to be comfortable with your own self and identity. I particularly like how she deals with teen friendship, and how we can really hurt and let down those we love but can fix things when we admit to our mistakes and shortcomings. Really great read.
Everything Jen Wang writes is fantastic. This is a very sweet story of two girls who are very different but want to be what the other is and learning that who they are is enough. Definitely a great read for any young teen! (and anyone else who needs to be reminded that they are enough).
Ack! I didn't expect to cry at a kid's graphic novel. It is sweet and fun and also wonderful.
It is silly but I picked it up impulsively because I remember seeing it listed in something I read, but I can't remember where I saw it (maybe in a must read list for kids highlighting diversity). The cover sticks out and is hard to miss. Anyway what a wonderful surprise read.
