The title’s double meaning representing if Finny stayed with Autumn that last night and if Finny was with Autumn the entirety of their high school years and further didn’t come to me until after finishing the book an hour later; love this aspect.
Yes this was a YA read, so discussions surrounding sex as an adult reader myself would be a little uncomfy, but I had to remind myself of the audience this book was intended for.
The ending wrecked me with Finny’s death. It did feel a little rushed and I wish I knew more of what we were left hanging with at the end in regards to Autumn and if she is pregnant or not with Finny’s child.
Many said they saw it coming but I didn’t until I reread the first chapter after finishing. It makes sense now why many knew what the ending would bring, so I must have not remembered myself the 1st chapter while reading the rest of the story.
Definitely shed a few tears and hope that mentally I’ll be able to pick up “If Only I Had Told Her” in February 2024 to read from Finny’s POV.

I'm glad I waited to write this review and sit with this book. I listened to the audio book while driving and playing cozy games. The last 10 minutes of this book had me frozen to the couch only focusing on the voice of the narrator. It was devastating. If you like a tragedy, this book is for you.
I went in blind to this book. I saw it in a bookstore last week and liked the cover. When it was easily available on Libby, I was excited to listen. I suppose this is what I get for not reading the synopsis.
Autumn's coming of age tale is beautiful. For the most part, it reflects on very realistic aspects of teen life. The way autumn loves, as an adult seem silly, but thinking back to my teen years I understand that these feelings are true to her. I suppose the least realistic aspect is that both main character have the same partner for all of high school. That's laughable.
That aside, the characterization of Jamie, Autumn's boyfriend, is troubling. He has qualities bordering on an emotionally abusive partner and they are glossed over. I worry that a vulnerable teen girl would see elements of their partner in Jamie and feel validated that it is okay behavior.
Mental health is also a huge element in this story. I worry that in the end Autumn's attempt to end her life is romanticized especially with the foreshadowing of Romeo and Juliet being sad and beautiful.
In my head, this book ends differently. Autumn and Fin end up together happy and healthy. They go to college, get married and live a long and happy life together. The mothers are thrilled and this union brings peace to both of them.

Absolutely in love with this series, I cried so much reading this. I’m in love with the characters
This book felt a lot to me like the perks of being a wallflower, very similar structure and storyline type where you are kind of just following someone's life, however that ending! You can’t do that to me authors! Almost cried reading that one.

The writing was somewhat predictable but it was coming from a teenage girl, main character. The title comes from the fact that if she would have just told this boy her true feelings back in the beginning of middle school, their lives could have turned out differently.
