Predictable, basic, slightly preachy story about a girl finding her own voice against the strict rules of her village. The illustrations, with their muted color scheme had a soothing effect on me. Overall this book was okay, but not particularly memorable.

Just lovely-- the language, the way Noot blossoms as a painter, and is both bold and respectful of her elders. Very sweet and satisfying.

Noot wants to learn how to paint umbrellas, like the other women in her small Thai village, but she loves elephants instead of the butterflies and flowers everyone else does. She paints the traditional way, but uses scraps to make smaller, elephant-covered umbrellas for herself; when the visiting king sees them on her windowsill, he recognizes her for "painting from her heart".

Charming, Demi-like illustrations.

I love stories where the parents are (one) together and (two) they encourage their children. This book is great because the little girl is encouraged to express herself...but on her time not the family time.
