This book is a hazy, fever dream through and through. I felt somewhat numb, and got unhinged and not fully conscious vibes from the characters, almost as if they were at all times a little drunk. The plot is what peaked my interest the most, but it wasn't actually the center of the story, nor was it solved. This book is like when you're in a summer beach vacation, you've had a few drinks, it's absurdly and blazingly hot, the sun is blinding you, you've been swimming in the ocean and now everything is sticky and you're disoriented because of the waves. That's the closest description of my experience reading this book. It's very poetic in many different ways, but also reckless with the suicide subject. I understand that perhaps this could be a way of looking at it and hence, making you think about how fragile our lives really are, but I think the way it was discussed made it sound almost easy and sometimes the only possible answer to a given emotional situation, and it could be very triggering for some people. Please be careful picking this up! It wasn't triggering for me, but also didn't get much back from this read.

very vibey but a strange perspective on incest

reading this, I felt a new experience that I had never before gotten from other Banana Yoshimoto novels. I dunno, it all feels really strange. like most of Yoshimoto's other novels, this novel also explores loss and grief, with very sensitive TWs such as suicide and incest. one thing that I don't like the most is the ending of this novel, because in my opinion it doesn't quite explain the ending of the "curse" which is believed to exist with the novel's manuscript. I'm very curious about the end story of each character and how they live their lives afterwards.
