Like the blurb on the cover says, everyday events were made romantic and whimsical. It’s such a twisted story. While reading it, it felt like I was in a bubble with the characters, one that was not meant to be understood by outsiders. Not too much can’t be said without spoiling it so if you’re into weird, twisted, and mesmerizing stories, pick this up immediately. I definitely need to read more by this author!

Banana Yoshimoto has quickly become one of my favorite authors. I think her writing is haunting and eerie, and I really appreciate the tone of her work. I like how the narrator of this story, while involved in the action, remains the least interesting character of this story and acts as a mirror for everyone else. I have to wonder if I'd like it more or less with different translation. Overall, I'd say I loved it.

Typical Banana magical realism and dreamlike fiction. Also typical Banana content warnings. The artistic choice of accidental (and not so accidental) incest was dubious at best — a bit desperate-to-be-edgy. Definitely emphasised the messy dynamics though.
