Absolut traumhaft.

“All I remember is the hot sunlight, and a strong sense of not being there.”

(actually 3.5)

The premise is an interesting one: a cursed work of fiction drives anyone who wants to translate it from English to Japanese to kill themselves. Nothing much of note is done with this premise though. I don't know what it is - a lack of follow-through? a willingness to dive deeper in the premise? in inability to connect dots? - but it frustratingly ripples throughout the rest of the book. Themes like incest, suicide, and lesbianism are proposed but not thoroughly explored; sentences, much like the disparate thoughts of the main character, never seem to connect. A shame, since I really liked Banana Yoshimoto's Kitchen.

DNF after 84 pages.

I liked the vibe of the writing, but didn't really hit me in any of my emotions. Kind of struggled tracking who was who and was involved with who. Thought it was interesting though.

I enjoyed being in the world but it wasn’t my favorite of Banana’s books. I thought the incest theme was strange and the teen-adult romantic relationship was very normalized. As always with Banana’s books, it was a quick and easy read with powerful messages.
