Banana Yoshimoto

I like the author's strange voice, and I look forward to reading another of her books.  I think maybe this was not the one to start with - or I should've read it younger, or just at a different time.  Really beautiful parts, themes, I did like it, I just also felt immediately I could like her writing more in a later piece.

In the afterword of the novel, Yoshimoto says that within the small world she created, she wanted to explore as many themes that interested her as possible. I think this exploration only added to the dreamy sense of nostalgia I’ve come to expect from Yoshimoto’s writing. This book was challenging, beautiful, and impossible to put down.

This isn't a book without flaws. Heck, it's not even really about what I thought it was going to be about, but did I care? Nope. It was one of those rare books that I didn't want to finish and so strung out my reading of it rather than gobbling it up like I wanted.

It's a crime that this book has been sat on my shelf since Christmas 2020 with only one prior half-hearted attempt to read it. Just shows me I should read more books when I have peak levels of excitement regarding them, rather being scared to pick them up and hate them. Excuse me while I go to fish other previous gifts from my shelves

Wonder if I would've liked it more was I younger? I appreciate authors ability to capture summer vibes but the characters and their motivations fell flat for me
