This is a wonderfully told tale that honors the journey of the refugee. From waking up in the middle of the night to waiting in an over packed boat for a larger boat that will take them to a better land. Everyone wishes they could make the journey, the night wishes, the sun wishes, the path wishes it could be easier for the girl & her family.

Gorgeous illustrations! This book is best for older kids, children who are familiar with refugees, or with an adult providing a lot of context. It would be a great companion book to Stormy Seas or When Stars are Scattered.

A young girl and her family prepare for a dangerous journey to a new land as refugees.

Minimal (yet powerful) text accompanies stunning illustrations to show the immigrant experience. Share with older children (6-10).

Possible spoilers (?) This is such a beautiful and poetic book. The story is such a complex one, but the author and artist manage to do it with very few words. The artwork is gorgeous, using a dark color palette to portray the fear and sadness the main character feels, then transitioning into brighter colors near the end to illustrate hopefulness.
