This book was so good. It was so close to reality but really made me rethink things about how I choose to live. I was really moved and encouraged by the characters.

While The Measure posed an interesting premise, I felt it overall fell flat. I found most of it to be slow paced and occasionally boring, but the characters were unique and I liked how they all seemed very human. I was surprised by how easily the world seemed to adapt to the reality of the strings and was expecting something more dramatic to happen when I originally read the premise of the book. The ending was also a bit unsatisfying to me, and the only “plot twist” was very predictable in my opinion. There were also a lot of plot holes, as there’s bound to be when irrevocable fate is involved (if someone were to behead, burn, or drown a long stringer how are they supposed to survive that?). Overall it was an interesting if sometimes slow book and I found it hard to sympathize with the characters’ problems and the world around them since the premise was so far removed from our own reality.

Based on the premise, I expected this to be some sort of thrilling sci fi story with high stakes and people trying to reverse their fate. Instead, I got a bunch of politics and a poorly disguised metaphor for how minorities are treated.
What was the point of this book? To comment about life? If so, it didn’t succeed because I was bored out of my mind the whole time. You follow so many characters and none of them leave an impression. I couldn’t care less about what would happen to any of them, or about the didactic political commentary this book served as a vessel for.
