In short, this book is a great concept that was executed quite well. I think for me, it was fun to consider exactly how modern society would crumble if we were presented with a new tool of discrimination. 

The Measure seems to suggest that oppression and discrimination will always be present in society, so long as the overwhelming majority of people can be influenced into us/them thinking. We see the way this plays out in post-apocalyptic contexts, so it was refreshing to see the same philosophical conundrum play out under different conditions. 

While Erlick addresses the traditional "roles" used to justify discrimination—such as those based on race or sex—I wish she had further explored the intersectionality of these roles and how they converge. It is possible, however, that Erlick may be trying to suggest how other forms of discrimination may become overshadowed when a new, more dominant form emerges, but, I find this perspective a bit unrealistic. 

Overall, I would certainly recommend. Definitely thought provoking.

this is an interesting premise for a book! for the first half of the book i was hooked. there are a lot of characters and everyone is reacting to the appearance of these boxes (telling them how long they will live) very differently. by the middle of the book though, it felt quite repetitive and honestly was dragging a bit for me. i think this would have been so strong as a novella, but it really was just too long to hold my attention.

I really regret not choosing this for my last book club pick, as it was so thought-provoking and provides endless content for conversations. I think my rating suffered a little bit because it took me so long to read, but that's because the themes are so heavy and emotional that I had to stop and come up from air a lot to get through it.

The Measure will force you to think about mortality in many ways, and that's not an easy thing to do. I'm finding it hard to write about this book without fully getting into it (another reason I wish I'd brought it to my book club!), but I really liked it and I think it's absolutely worth the read when you're in the mindset for a bit of an emotional challenge.
