Everyone mentions the similarity to Anne of Green Gables and yes, this is essentially an American Anne Of Green Gables, but that doesn’t take away from the story! (This book came first, for anyone curious)
This is a charming tale about a confident, smart, charismatic girl sent to live with her unmarried aunts to turn into a lady. It’s quaint,
fun, and an easy read altogether.
Really the only things that bothered me about this book were the era appropriate racism/sexism (very very minor and completely era appropriate), the older language (historical and often stylized), and the love interest! Seriously. What was up with the love interest? A 30 year old man falls in love with Rebecca but meets her when she’s 11!!! Gross.
At the end of the book it seems that he idealizes her, her sweetness and her innocence and may admire more than love her but still.
There are academic papers comparing this to Anne Of Green Gables and endless blog posts and reviews pitting the two against each other. That’s fine for the academics and the adults.
But at the end of the day, if you, or a young girl in your life, love(d) Pollyanna, Anne Of Green Gables, or Little Women, you’ll probably love this story too.

I enjoyed the story and the character. It was fun to make comparisons between the heroine here and other heroines written about during the same era (Laura Ingalls Wilder, Anne of Avonlea, The Five Little Peppers, Pollyanna etc) and to even compare the world view of her author to authors from that era like Beatrix Potter.
The biggest drawback to the story was the narrative style - it seems the author had three different themes or approaches to what she was doing - while individually I like the threads okay she did not do a great job bringing them together.

How a girl with a lot of spunk copes with living with her prim and proper aunts far from home. I'm not the right audience, but still worth knowing what was written about girls through the years...

Rebecca is one of seven children, and she is sent to live with her two unmarried aunts. This means her mother will have one less mouth to feed, and Rebecca will have a chance to be educated. Published in 1903, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm veers between feeling extremely outdated, and being lively and memorable. Rebecca is a little like Anne of Green Gables: she makes the best of bad situations, and charms those who appreciate her good heart and wit. But while she's not as daring as Anne, her loving nature and passion for friendship, books and helpfulness can charm even the coldest modern heart. There is a lot of religious in this book, and the arrival of missionaries talking about "heathens" is very unfortunate, but mostly this a good mixture of believable growing pains with descriptions of country life. Good for the long dark hours of the mind.

Sweet, but bore many a resemblance to Anne of Green Gables, and I think I preferred Anne.
